Twitter Translator 101

Note: It has been quite a while since I have done something at the TTC, so information written here can be outdated.

I often recieve questions regarding the Translator badge on my Twitter profile. ‘’OMG, how did you get that badge!?’’ is an example.

We start with the Twitter Translation Center. As you might not know Twitter is translated by more than 350,000 (or 350.000 depending on your location) volunteers. These volunteers translate Twitter in more than 20 languages, and as a reward the top 60% of all the translators get a Translator badge. This badge represents the fact that a user is a Twitter Translator.

But how do you earn a badge yourself? First we go to the Twiter Translation Center at https://translate.twitter.com. New users have to read the Translator policy (and agree if they want to translate Twitter). After that, you’re ready to translate Twitter!

The Twitter Translation Center

I strongly recommend starting with the Learn section. Here you can find more information about translating, code and many more things. Knowledge is power!

Let’s go to the Translate section. Here you can translate all the different parts of the Twitter websites and applications. When you see a string which needs to be translated there are 2 things you can do:

  1. Vote for a translation which is made by another translator
  2. Submit your own translation

Both options can contribute to your rank in the Twitter Translator world. Also, learn from the mistakes you make and learn from other translators!

That’s a quick guide on earning a Translator badge. Just translate. Or vote, depending on the string in question.
